Administering Daily Supplements to Pregnant Women

ALAIN LABRIQUE: So another challenge that we worked with was how do we administer antenatal supplements A trial we recently conducted in Bangladesh, that's currently in its last phase, required the daily supplementation with multiple micro-nutrients or iron fully acid on a daily basis for about 36,000 pregnant women

So now you think 800 staff administering daily supplements to a group of women We required a way to top off their tablets in the field setting from a master bottle of supplements And so, we wanted to do this in a way that both respected the participants to show them that we were trying to maintain as much cleanliness as possible in that process, but also to minimize the number of errors in topping off the bottles themselves because that was critical to counting the compliance in the field setting to these supplements So one of the things we developed, based on what we saw here in US pharmacies, was a locally made counting tray built in rural Guibanda by tinsmiths who are busy making oil lamps and other local accoutrement for the villages But this basically allows a worker to come in and dump out the contents of their woman's tablet bottle and then using a clean method, count out the number of tablets that are in her possession, rapidly put them into a holding chamber and then top off whatever balance was necessary

And again, immediately dropping them into the bottle, where they're safely stored thereafter [MUSIC PLAYING]
